Toonophobia - a definition

We have identified eight components that define Toonophobia, and we are probably going to publish them in a document called 'Toonophobia: A Challenge For Us All'.

They are:

1. Danish cartoons are seen as a monolithic bloc, static and all the same. A cartoon critical of suicide bombing can be classified with and dismissed with a cartoon that criticises the publishing newspaper for being reactionary, and makes no comment about Islam or Islamism at all.
2. Cartoons are seen as separate and "other". They do not derive from any currents in their parent society, like humour or satire.
3. Cartoons are seen as inferior to Islamism. They are seen as barbaric, insulting, irrational and racist.
4. Cartoons are seen as violent, aggressive, "worse than 9/11", apocalyptic and part of a "clash of civilisations".
5. Cartoons are seen as motivated by the political ideology of a "right wing newspaper" and it is seen as relevant that they were published in a country that has an official Nazi Party.
6. Criticisms of Islamism made through the medium of cartoons are rejected out of hand.
7. Hostility towards cartoons is used to justify ever new restrictions on freedom of speech and expression, and to justify the increasing ghettoisation of society.
8. Anti-Cartoon hostility is seen as natural or normal.

Praise the mighty toons(PBUT)! Why do they fear our toons? Can they not see that they only wish to live peacefully next to the glorious and beautiful horoscope(SAW) that tells our future and drives our destiny?

Praise be to the back pages for there the toons rest in peace!

"For most toons the Montoon crisis dramatically exposed how partisan the media is – and, for many, how crass politicians are and how gullible the public is."

I've heard that the toony-looking chain are going to release a song about the terrible plight of toons, its called:

"Bombs don't kill people, toons do!"

Its got a great video and a funky beat.

And here's the first case of satirophobia, precursor of Toonophobia:

"Asma bint Marwan

Asma was a poetess who belonged to a tribe of Medinan pagans, and whose husband was named Yazid b. Zayd. She composed a poem blaming the Medinan pagans for obeying a stranger (Muhammad) and for not taking the initiative to attack him by surprise. When the Allah-inspired prophet heard what she had said, he asked, "Who will rid me of Marwan’s daughter?" A member of her husband’s tribe volunteered and crept into her house that night. She had five children, and the youngest was sleeping at her breast. The assassin gently removed the child, drew his sword, and plunged it into her, killing her in her sleep.

The following morning, the assassin defied anyone to take revenge. No one took him up on his challenge, not even her husband. In fact, Islam became powerful among his tribe. Previously, some members who had kept their conversion secret now became Muslims openly, "because they saw the power of Islam," conjectures Ibn Ishaq.

Source: Ibn Ishaq, pp. 675-76 / 995-96."

An entire generation has been brought up on toons, from buggys bunny to Judge Dredd.

These toons have represented a moral guide for a our children for many years.

Next they will be after our beloved Gorillaz! Woe is me!!! Don't let them take Jamie Hewitt!!

One thing that seems to constantly be misssed, is that the cartoons weren't just offensive - at least one of them was funny. I constantly hear that we had the right to publish them but we should have thought twice, they're not funny, they're just offensive. Well, rubbish! The cartoons that were taken to the middle east weren't even the accurate set from JP and were designed to be even worse.

The one I found funny was the one where they said to a suicide bomber - sorry, we've run out of virgins - obviously funny to satirise the ridiculous notion that is the rewards of 'martyrdom'.

I keep asking muslims to explain to me, one by one, why the cartoons are should be racist.

After their general rant, repeat my question, one by one please, and I NEVER got an answer.

@Luke: After all the ridiculing of the more hateful and ridiculous characters I'm not sure I want a t-shirt identifying who I am! Anonymity is the new Ignorance, it is bliss … :-)

BTW that’s a great site, really funny.

I love the headline: “Just Because God Loves to Kill Babies, Doesn't Give You Permission!” brilliant!

I actually wanted to thank them for the publicity, but comments are off.

Here's another fun one (hope they will make publicity for this one as well)

I agree, it's too dangerous - maybe we could start a line of pijamas?

I think that it is satire. I've been giving Ismeaal a bit of hard time to see what he really believes and how far deep the rabbit goes.

To his credit he has mostly addressed my questions, and has commented on my answers.

One of the things that we've discussed the earth being flat, he came up with the gem of information:

> ... the Qur'aan describes the
> earth as being the shape of an
> ostrich egg [snip] An ostich egg,
> it is very specific, please go
> and investigate.

You can say what you like about Ismaeel, but he has does know his Islam, Iman and Ihsan.

@luke: Pijamas? No self respecting infidel wears PJ's!

I look in on Islamophobia Watch most days when I need cheering up and wank just won't do it. Someone said earlier that they don't allow comments. True. My suspicion is that they would not like their unquestionining appeasement to be challenged by rational thought.

Re: the Islamophobia Watch piece (although they won't let us comment on their site, one presumes they are reading this one)

Their argument is not so much humourless as utterly specious! Group A says or does something which Group B happens to approve of. Group A neither seeks nor wants the approval of Group B (and indeed has specifically disavowed any link with them), but nevertheless Group B approves. From this, IW conclude that Group A must therefore support all the aims of Group B. This is appalling logic. Surely they can see this. There are no words to describe how utterly cretinous they are being here.

Sorry, just utterly p#ssed off/depressed at the utter ludicrousness of it. If the BNP decide to supprt the Lib Dems, does that automatically make the Lib Dems a bunch of BNPists? Gah.

Borders needs to identify the threat to safety implied in their
statement. Any threat must be fully investigated and identified by
law enforcement. The media needs to know about this, and we must urge
them and expect them to report on it. THIS IS BEYOND FREE SPEECH, it
is a very real issue of public safety. I suggest contacting BORDERS.
And if warranted, LAW ENFORCEMENT.

* Politely demand an explanation from Borders as to WHO/WHAT the theat is.
- If it turns out there is no threat (within the realm of possible
answers), demand an explanation of the safety threat implied in their
statement. If there is no threat, politely demand to know why they
were self censoring. Expect an answer.
- If there is a suspected threat, demand to know who or what the threat is.
If a there is even a suspected threat, it is reasonable to AT LEAST
inform law enforcement.
- If there is a *specific* threat, demand to know who or what the threat is.
If a specific threat exists, it is imperitive to notify law enforcement!

Please don't accept vague responses; politely demand and expect
specific answers.
Do not hesitate to properly contact law enforcement if you think it
is warranted.
NEVER accept "There's no threat because we're not carrying the
magazine" as an answer.

* Inform local and other law enforcement of the statement made by
Borders. Explain to them that this clearly implies a threat to public
safety, and tell them that you want it investigated. Then FULLY
EXPECT that they investigate.

We are not calling the cops about some urban legend our buddy emailed
us, we are asking them to investigate what appears to be a very
serious threat to public safety.

Local news should be encouraged to cover this PUBLIC SAFETY ISSUE.

If MANY of us act, we can get this issue explored more fully. I think
we have enough critical mass online to make this happen.
